Regulation is the fine adjustment of the piano’s action, the thousands of moving parts behind the keys, so that every note responds the same way under your fingers. A piano can be in perfect tune with beautiful tone and still feel sluggish and uneven if it is out of regulation, because touch lives in the mechanism, not the strings.

When you press a key on a grand, a chain of parts moves in sequence: the key lifts a wippen, which drives a jack that throws the hammer at the string, while a repetition lever and springs reset the hammer for the next blow and the damper lifts to let the note ring. Each note has more than thirty individual points of adjustment, and because they interact, changing one affects several others. That is why regulation is skilled, iterative work rather than a checklist.

What regulation adjusts

  • Key height, level & dip. Setting every key to a uniform height and travel, around 10 mm of dip on a grand, the reference for consistent feel.
  • Hammer blow distance. The hammer’s distance from the string, which sets leverage and power and the geometry for everything else.
  • Let-off and drop. The point, very close to the string, where the hammer trips free so the note can ring, set close and even for control at soft dynamics.
  • Aftertouch and backcheck. The final key travel and the catch on rebound that let you play softly, reliably, and repeat quickly.
  • Repetition. On a grand, tuning the repetition lever and springs so fast repeated notes come back instantly.
  • Damper timing. Regulating when the dampers lift and drop so notes sustain and stop cleanly and the pedal engages evenly.

Grand and upright

Grand actions use gravity and a repetition mechanism that resets the hammer before the key fully returns, which is what allows very fast repetition. Upright actions rely on springs and have a different geometry, so their repetition is inherently a little slower. We regulate each to the standard its design allows, and the payoff is the same: a keyboard that responds to your intention instead of getting in the way.

If the piano is in tune but simply does not feel even or responsive, regulation is usually what it needs.

How often should a piano be regulated?

For a home piano, a check and light regulation every few years is a reasonable guide, with a fuller regulation as the felt and cloth compress with age. New pianos often benefit from a regulation in their first year or two as parts settle, and heavily played, teaching, and performance instruments need it considerably more often.

Is action regulation the same as tuning?

No. Tuning adjusts string pitch so the piano plays in tune; regulation adjusts the mechanism so the piano plays evenly and responsively. They are different services with different tools and goals, and a piano can badly need one while the other is fine.
